Sejtsignálás, also known as cell signaling or intercellular signaling, refers to the process by which cells communicate with each other to coordinate physiological activities. This communication is essential for maintaining homeostasis, responding to environmental changes, and facilitating complex biological processes such as development, immunity, and tissue repair. Signals can be transmitted through direct contact between cells, via chemical messengers, or through the extracellular matrix.

The process typically involves three main stages: signal reception, signal transduction, and cellular response. First, a signaling molecule, or ligand, binds to a specific receptor on the target cell’s surface or within its cytoplasm. Receptors are often proteins that undergo conformational changes upon ligand binding, activating downstream signaling pathways. These pathways may involve a cascade of molecular interactions, including phosphorylation of proteins, activation of enzymes, or changes in gene expression.

In vertebrates, hormones, neurotransmitters, and growth factors are common signaling molecules. For example, insulin, a peptide hormone, binds to insulin receptors on muscle and fat cells, triggering a cascade that promotes glucose uptake and storage. Similarly, nerve cells communicate via neurotransmitters like acetylcholine, which bind to receptors on neighboring cells, transmitting electrical or chemical signals.

Disruptions in cell signaling can lead to diseases, including cancer, diabetes, and autoimmune disorders. For instance, mutations in signaling pathways may cause uncontrolled cell proliferation in cancer. Conversely, impaired signaling can result in metabolic disorders, such as insulin resistance in type 2 diabetes. Research into cell signaling mechanisms continues to advance therapeutic strategies, including targeted drug therapies that modulate specific signaling pathways.
