Sejtméretnövekedés, often translated as cell growth or cellular hypertrophy, refers to the increase in the size of individual cells. This phenomenon is a fundamental process in biology, occurring in both unicellular and multicellular organisms. In unicellular organisms, cell growth is a prerequisite for cell division. A cell must grow to a sufficient size to allocate the necessary resources and machinery for creating a daughter cell. This growth phase is tightly regulated by internal and external signals that monitor nutrient availability, cellular stress, and developmental cues.

In multicellular organisms, sejtméretnövekedés plays a critical role in development, tissue repair, and adaptation. For instance, during embryonic development, cells enlarge as they differentiate and mature. In adult tissues, cell growth can occur in response to increased functional demand, a process known as physiological hypertrophy. A classic example is the enlargement of cardiac muscle cells in response to prolonged exercise. Similarly, skeletal muscle cells undergo hypertrophy when exposed to resistance training. Cell growth can also be a pathological response, termed pathological hypertrophy, which can occur in conditions like certain heart diseases where the heart muscle thickens abnormally, impairing its function.
