Sejsmometry

Sejsmometry is a term used in some geophysical contexts to describe the measurement and analysis of seismic waves to characterize the Earth’s interior and monitor ground motion. In practice, it overlaps with established fields such as seismometry and seismology, with particular emphasis on measurement accuracy, instrumentation performance, and data quality control. The term is not uniformly standardized, and usage varies by region and research group.

Core activities in sejsmometry include deploying and calibrating seismic sensors, accelerometers, and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers, as well as collecting ambient and event-based seismic data. Analyses typically involve waveform processing, travel-time and velocity modeling, spectral analysis, and real-time monitoring for hazard assessment.

Applications span earthquake engineering, hazard mitigation, subsurface imaging, and exploration geophysics. Sejsmometric studies contribute to rapid event characterization, magnitude estimation, site response studies, and long-term monitoring of fault zones and active reservoirs.

Challenges include ensuring cross-instrument comparability, calibrating sensors, handling large data volumes, and establishing common standards for data formats and metadata. While not universally defined, sejsmometry remains closely related to seismology and seismometry, and may serve as a practical term in multidisciplinary projects focusing on measurement fidelity and rapid decision-making.
