Seisomatyöpisteiden, or standing workstations, are work surfaces designed to be used while a person is standing. They offer an alternative to traditional sitting desks and are increasingly found in modern offices and homes. The primary benefit of a standing workstation is the ability to alternate between sitting and standing throughout the workday, which is believed to reduce the negative health effects associated with prolonged sitting.

Studies suggest that spending more time on your feet can lead to various health improvements, such as reduced back pain, improved posture, and a potential increase in calorie expenditure. The concept of "active working" encourages movement and changes in posture throughout the day, and standing workstations are a key component of this approach.

There are various types of standing workstations available. Some are fixed-height desks that are exclusively for standing. More common are adjustable-height desks, often referred to as sit-stand desks, which allow users to easily transition between sitting and standing positions. These can be manually adjusted or electronically controlled. There are also desk converters, which are placed on top of an existing desk, transforming it into a standing workstation.

When using a standing workstation, it is important to maintain good posture, ensure the workstation is at an ergonomically appropriate height, and to alternate between sitting and standing regularly. Standing for excessively long periods without breaks can also have its own drawbacks. Therefore, the goal is not to eliminate sitting entirely, but to integrate more standing and movement into the daily routine.
