Seikoitustulehdus

Seikoitustulehdus refers to inflammation of the ear canal, commonly known as otitis externa or swimmer's ear. This condition affects the outer part of the ear and can cause significant discomfort. It is often triggered by water remaining in the ear after swimming or bathing, creating a moist environment conducive to bacterial or fungal growth. Other contributing factors include trauma to the ear canal, such as from cotton swabs or scratching, and skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis.

Symptoms of seikoitustulehdus typically include itching, redness, and pain in the ear. The pain may worsen when the ear is touched or pulled. Some individuals may also experience discharge from the ear, a feeling of fullness, or temporary hearing loss due to swelling and debris in the ear canal.

Diagnosis is usually made through a physical examination of the ear canal by a healthcare professional. Treatment depends on the cause and severity of the inflammation. For bacterial infections, antibiotic ear drops are commonly prescribed. Antifungal ear drops are used for fungal infections. Pain relief can be achieved with over-the-counter pain medications. In cases of severe swelling, a wick may be inserted into the ear canal to help deliver medication and reduce inflammation. Prevention strategies include keeping the ear canal dry, avoiding the insertion of foreign objects, and using earplugs while swimming.
