SeeSeewinkel

SeeSeewinkel is a geographic region in eastern Austria, located at the eastern end of Lake Neusiedl (Neusiedler See) in Burgenland, near the border with Hungary. It constitutes the eastern part of the Neusiedler See-Seewinkel area, a low-lying, steppe-like landscape with reedbeds, salt pans, and numerous shallow wetlands surrounding the lake.

The area is notable for its biodiversity, especially as a stopover and wintering site for migratory birds. Wetlands and grasslands support a wide range of waterfowl, waders and other bird species, making the Seewinkel one of Europe’s important bird areas. The region is protected as the Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park in Austria, and is part of the Fertő/Neusiedler See Cultural Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001.

Tourism and access: The region attracts visitors for birdwatching, cycling, hiking and wine tourism in nearby villages. The best-known viewpoints for birding include observation towers around Illmitz and Podersdorf am See. Road networks and marked trails facilitate exploration, and there are visitor centers and guided tours operated by park authorities.
