Sedimentaatioanalyysissä, often translated as sedimentation analysis, is a laboratory technique used to determine the particle size distribution of suspensions and dispersions. The fundamental principle relies on the fact that particles of different sizes settle at different rates in a fluid medium due to gravity. Larger and denser particles will sediment faster than smaller and lighter ones.

The process typically involves preparing a suspension of the material in a liquid, often water or a specific solvent, and then allowing it to settle in a graduated cylinder or a specialized sedimentation vessel. The concentration of particles remaining in the supernatant liquid or the amount of sediment collected at the bottom is measured over time. By monitoring these changes, the settling velocities of different particle fractions can be calculated.

Several methods exist within sedimentation analysis. Gravimetric sedimentation involves collecting and weighing the sediment that accumulates at specific time intervals. Pipette sedimentation, also known as the Andreasen pipette method, involves withdrawing supernatant samples at various depths and times, and then determining the solid content of these samples. Hydrometer sedimentation uses a hydrometer to measure the density of the suspension as it settles, which is directly related to the concentration of suspended solids.

Sedimentation analysis is a valuable tool in various fields, including soil science, ceramics, pharmaceuticals, and the food industry. It is employed for quality control, material characterization, and understanding the behavior of particulate systems. The accuracy of the results depends on factors such as the density and shape of the particles, the viscosity of the liquid, and the temperature during the analysis.
