Secondhandrøg

Secondhandrøg, also known as secondhand smoke, refers to the smoke that is exhaled by a smoker and inhaled by non-smokers. It is a mixture of the smoke the smoker inhales and exhales, as well as the smoke that escapes from the smoker's lungs. Secondhandrøg contains over 7,000 chemicals, including more than 70 known to cause cancer. It is estimated that secondhandrøg exposure can cause 3,000 to 5,000 deaths per year in the United States alone.

Secondhandrøg can affect both adults and children. It can cause respiratory problems, heart disease, and even cancer in adults. Children exposed to secondhandrøg are at a higher risk of developing asthma, bronchitis, and other respiratory illnesses. They may also experience reduced lung function and growth, as well as behavioral and cognitive problems.

The effects of secondhandrøg are cumulative, meaning that the longer a person is exposed, the greater the risk of health problems. Even brief exposure can be harmful. It is important to note that secondhandrøg can linger in the air for hours after a smoker has left a room.

To reduce exposure to secondhandrøg, it is recommended to avoid smoking in enclosed spaces, such as homes, cars, and workplaces. Non-smokers should also avoid being in the same room as a smoker, especially when they are pregnant or have young children. If you live with a smoker, consider moving to a non-smoking residence or encouraging the smoker to quit.
