Scopulariopsis

Scopulariopsis is a genus of filamentous fungi that includes several species known to cause human infections. These fungi are ubiquitous in the environment, commonly found in soil, decaying plant material, and even on human skin and nails. While many species are saprophytic, meaning they live on dead organic matter, some can act as opportunistic pathogens, particularly in individuals with weakened immune systems.

The clinical manifestations of Scopulariopsis infections, known as scopulariosis, vary depending on the affected site. Cutaneous infections are the most common, often presenting as superficial skin lesions, onychomycosis (nail infections), or keratitis (eye infections). In immunocompromised individuals, more invasive infections can occur, affecting the lungs, bones, or even leading to disseminated disease. Diagnosis typically involves microscopic examination of clinical specimens and fungal culture. Treatment strategies depend on the severity and location of the infection and may include topical or systemic antifungal medications. Prevention focuses on good hygiene practices and avoiding contact with contaminated materials, especially for those at higher risk.
