Sclerotische

Sclerotische is an adjective used in Dutch-language scientific terminology to describe features related to sclerosis or sclerotization. The exact sense depends on the field: it can refer to the hardening of tissues due to pathological processes (sclerosis) or to the hardening of an insect or arthropod cuticle (sclerotization).

In biology, the term is commonly linked to sclerotization, the biochemical process by which the exoskeleton of arthropods becomes rigid. Through cross-linking of structural proteins in the cuticle, the integument gains toughness and resistance. Structures that have undergone this process may be described as sclerotische, indicating their hardened, plate-like character, such as sclerites that form the rigid segments of an arthropod body.

In medicine, sclerosis denotes a pathological hardening of tissue. Sclerotic changes can occur in various organs and vessels, for example arterial sclerosis (arteriosclerosis) or tissue stiffening in chronic liver disease. When Dutch medical or anatomical texts discuss such observations, they may use sclerotische to characterize the hardened state of tissue or the process of hardening itself.
