Schulterstützen

Schulterstützen, also known as shoulder rests, are accessories used by string instrument players, most commonly violinists and violists, to provide comfort and support for the instrument. They attach to the back of the instrument and extend outwards, resting against the player's shoulder or collarbone. This elevates the instrument to a more ergonomic playing position, reducing strain on the neck, shoulders, and back.

The design of shoulder rests can vary significantly.
