Schlunzlaufen

Schlunzlaufen is a traditional folk custom celebrated in parts of Bavaria, Germany, particularly in the Allgäu region. It typically takes place on Epiphany, January 6th, though some communities may observe it on a nearby Sunday. The core of the custom involves young men, often unmarried, dressing in elaborate costumes. These costumes are usually made of straw, adorned with colorful ribbons and bells. The individuals wearing these outfits are known as "Schlunzen."

The Schlunzen engage in a procession through the village, visiting houses and farms. Their primary role is to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck and fertility for the coming year. They do this through a combination of actions: shaking their bells to create a loud, resounding noise, and performing a ritualistic dance. In some variations, they may also carry symbolic items such as whips or small branches.

The Schlunzlaufen is a community event that often includes a feast and social gathering after the procession. While the exact origins are somewhat obscure, it is believed to have roots in ancient pagan fertility rites, later integrated with Christian traditions.
