Schichtwicklung

Schichtwicklung refers to a manufacturing process primarily used in the production of composite materials, particularly for cylindrical or curved structures. It involves the successive layering of reinforcing fibers, such as carbon fiber or fiberglass, impregnated with a resin matrix onto a rotating mold or mandrel. The fibers can be applied in various forms, including rovings, tapes, or fabrics, and are typically laid down in specific orientations to achieve desired mechanical properties like strength and stiffness.

The process begins with the preparation of the mold and the fiber material. The resin is often applied to the fibers just before they are wound onto the mold, a method known as filament winding. Alternatively, pre-impregnated (pre-preg) fibers can be used, offering more precise control over resin content. As the mold rotates, the winding machinery guides the fiber material at controlled tension and angle, building up the composite structure layer by layer. Multiple winding passes may be performed to achieve the required thickness and structural integrity.

Once the winding is complete, the resin is cured, typically through heat or a chemical reaction, solidifying the composite structure. Schichtwicklung is a versatile technique suitable for producing a wide range of products, including pipes, pressure vessels, drive shafts, and rocket motor casings, due to its ability to create strong, lightweight, and complex shapes. The controlled application of fibers allows for optimized material usage and tailored performance characteristics.
