Schengenjärjestely

Schengenjärjestely refers to the agreement and associated policies that have abolished internal border controls between participating European countries. This arrangement allows for free movement of people within the Schengen Area, meaning citizens of member states and visitors can travel from one Schengen country to another without passport checks. The Schengen Agreement was initially signed in Schengen, Luxembourg, on June 14, 1985. Its primary goal is to facilitate travel and trade, enhance security cooperation, and create a unified European identity.

The Schengen Area currently comprises 27 European countries, including most European Union member states, as well as some non-EU countries like Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein. While internal borders are open, external borders of the Schengen Area are subject to common rules and controls. This includes harmonized visa policies for short stays, police and judicial cooperation, and the exchange of information through systems like the Schengen Information System (SIS). The implementation of the Schengen acquis has significantly impacted travel, making it easier and more convenient for millions of people each year. However, it also necessitates strong cooperation among member states to manage external borders and maintain security within the zone.
