Schemaorgi

Schemaorgi is an open standard and community-driven framework for describing structured data on the web. It is designed to complement schema.org by introducing modular ontologies, explicit versioning, and provenance metadata that enable more precise data interchange across domains.

Origins and scope: conceived by researchers and developers in the web standards community to address interoperability gaps between diverse schemas. The project emphasizes compatibility with existing schema.org annotations and JSON-LD, RDFa, and Turtle serialization. It defines core concepts such as modules, entities, properties, and relationships, along with mechanisms for extending vocabularies without breaking existing data.

Design and features: modular ontologies allow domain-specific vocabularies to be composed as reusable units. Each module carries its own namespace, version, and provenance. Schemaorgi supports cross-module linking via stable identifiers and a mapping layer to schema.org terms. Validation and reasoning tools are provided to check conformance and enable inferences.

Governance and adoption: Schemaorgi operates through an open governance model with community working groups, public drafts, and a request-for-comment process. Adoption remains modest and is mostly found in research projects, cultural heritage initiatives, and some industry pilots exploring richer metadata and lineage.
