Scheels

Scheels was a regional American retail chain specializing in sporting goods, outdoor equipment, and recreational products. Founded in 1936 by the Scheel family in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the company initially operated as a sporting goods store before expanding into a full-fledged retail chain. The name "Scheels" became synonymous with outdoor recreation, offering a wide range of items such as camping gear, fishing supplies, hunting equipment, and athletic apparel.

Throughout its history, Scheels grew significantly, opening locations across the Midwest and parts of the western United States. The company was known for its knowledgeable staff, who often provided expert advice to customers on outdoor activities and product selection. In addition to its retail stores, Scheels operated a mail-order catalog business, catering to customers who preferred shopping from home.

By the late 20th century, Scheels had become one of the largest sporting goods retailers in the United States, with hundreds of locations. The company also sponsored various outdoor and sporting events, further solidifying its reputation as a leader in the industry. However, like many regional retailers, Scheels faced financial challenges in the early 21st century, including competition from larger chains and the rise of online shopping.

In 2016, Scheels filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, marking the beginning of its decline. Despite efforts to restructure, the company continued to struggle, and in 2019, it announced plans to close all remaining stores. The final locations closed in 2020, effectively ending the Scheels brand after more than eight decades in business. The closure left a void in the Midwest market, though some of its former stores were later acquired by other retailers. Scheels remains a notable example of a once-dominant regional retailer that could not fully adapt to changing consumer trends.
