Schaltsteckung

Schaltsteckung refers to the specific configuration or arrangement of electrical contacts within a connector or socket that enables a particular switching function. This term is most commonly encountered in the context of automotive electrical systems, particularly with trailer hitches and their associated wiring harnesses.

When a trailer is connected to a towing vehicle, a Schaltsteckung ensures that the vehicle's lights (tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, etc.) are correctly routed to the corresponding lights on the trailer. Different trailer lighting standards, such as 7-pin or 13-pin systems, have distinct Schaltsteckungen that dictate which pin carries which signal. For example, one pin might be for the left turn signal, another for the right, and another for the brake lights.
