Schagen

Schagen is a city and municipality in the Netherlands, located in the province of North Holland. The municipality covers the town of Schagen and several surrounding villages and rural areas. It lies in a region known for agriculture and horticulture.

The present municipality was formed in 2013 by the merger of the former municipalities of Schagen, Harenkarspel and Zijpe. Schagen town remains the administrative center and largest population center within the municipality.

The area consists of polder landscapes, farmland and small waterways. The local economy is based on agriculture, horticulture, especially bulb cultivation, and services that support residents and visitors.

The town center features a historic market square and a church with medieval origins, together with traditional Dutch architecture and local shops. The municipality hosts markets and cultural events during the year.

Schagen is accessible by regional roads and is connected to surrounding towns by bus services. The closest railway stations are in nearby larger towns, from which onward connections are available. The area also lies near coastal recreation areas, which attract visitors in the warmer months.
