Satzgliedreihenfolge refers to the order in which grammatical constituents, such as subjects and predicates, are arranged in a sentence. In German, the order of sentence constituents can significantly affect the sentence's meaning and grammatical correctness. The standard order is subject-verb-object (SVO), but there are several exceptions where the word order can be reversed or interrupted.

The old declarative word order is a specific example, where the subject is followed by a verb in the present tense, indicating that the action was performed and is now completed. In opposition, the new declarative word order is characterized by the subject preceding the verb, and both the auxiliary verb and the main verb appear together. Furthermore, dependent clauses often have a different word order compared to independent clauses.

Analogically, the main verb within compound sentences or subordinate clauses adheres to a word order that differs from the SVO. There are instances in which the object precedes the subject (OVS). This is especially seen in subordinate clauses. The position of adverbials also has an impact on the word order of a sentence, their placement before the main verb is standard in subordinate clauses, while in main clauses, especially in the case of temporal adverbials such as "als" or "sobald", have a complementing or contrary interpreting impact.
