Satchitananda

Satchitananda is a Sanskrit term used in Hindu philosophy, particularly within Vedanta, to describe the nature of Brahman, the ultimate reality. It is a compound word formed from three Sanskrit words: Sat, Chit, and Ananda.

Sat refers to existence or being. It signifies the unchangeable, eternal, and absolute reality of Brahman, which is the underlying substance of all that is. Sat is pure existence, free from any limitations or modifications.

Chit means consciousness or awareness. It represents the pure, unadulterated consciousness of Brahman. This consciousness is not like individual human consciousness, which is subjective and limited, but rather an all-pervading, objective awareness that knows and sustains everything.

Ananda translates to bliss or joy. It describes the inherent nature of Brahman as supreme happiness and contentment. This bliss is not an emotion dependent on external factors but an intrinsic state of being, a profound and perfect joy that is its own cause.

Together, Satchitananda is understood as the triune nature of the Absolute. Brahman is pure existence (Sat), pure consciousness (Chit), and pure bliss (Ananda). The realization of Satchitananda is considered the highest spiritual goal, leading to liberation (moksha) from the cycle of birth and death. It is the ultimate truth that pervades and sustains the entire universe.
