Sarjaväyläliitäntöjä, often translated as serial bus interfaces or serial communication interfaces, refers to a type of data transfer where information is transmitted bit by bit sequentially over a single communication line or a pair of lines. This contrasts with parallel interfaces, which transmit multiple bits simultaneously over separate lines. Serial interfaces are widely used in modern computing and electronics due to their simplicity, reduced wiring, and often higher potential for longer-distance communication.

Common examples of serial bus interfaces include Universal Serial Bus (USB), which is ubiquitous for connecting peripherals to computers; Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA), used for connecting storage devices; Ethernet, for networking; and various industrial communication protocols like RS-232, RS-485, and CAN bus. Each of these interfaces has specific characteristics regarding speed, protocol, connector type, and intended application.

The advantages of serial communication often include lower cost due to fewer wires, reduced susceptibility to crosstalk and signal distortion over longer distances compared to parallel interfaces, and the ability to achieve higher data rates at longer distances with advanced encoding and signaling techniques. The evolution of serial technologies has been driven by the demand for faster data transfer and more integrated connectivity in a wide range of devices.
