Sarjaliityntä

Sarjaliityntä, a Finnish term translating to "series connection" in English, refers to a method of connecting electrical components or devices in an electrical circuit where the components are arranged end-to-end. This arrangement ensures that the electric current flows through each component sequentially. In a series connection, the total resistance of the circuit is the sum of the individual resistances of each component. Similarly, the voltage across the entire series arrangement is distributed among the individual components, with each component receiving a portion of the total voltage.

The defining characteristic of a series connection is that there is only one path for the current to flow. If any component in the series circuit breaks or becomes open, the entire circuit will be interrupted, and current will cease to flow. This is a key difference from a parallel connection, where components are connected across each other, providing multiple paths for current. Applications of series connections include simple circuits like old-fashioned Christmas lights, where if one bulb burns out, the entire string goes dark, or in battery packs, where multiple batteries are connected in series to achieve a higher voltage.
