Sarawakian

The term Sarawakian refers to individuals who originate from the state of Sarawak, located on the island of Borneo in Malaysia. Sarawak was previously a British colony, before it merged with other states to form Malaysia in 1963.

Sarawakians are a culturally diverse group, with the majority of the population belonging to indigenous ethnic groups such as the Iban, Bidayuh, Orang Ulu and the Sarawak Malay. These groups have maintained their traditional practices and customs, while also being influenced by Malaysian and global cultures.

Sarawakians commonly speak various dialects of the Malay language, as well as indigenous languages and English. The state has a significant English-speaking population due to its history as a British colony and its current position as a major tourist destination.

The economy of Sarawak is primarily driven by the oil and gas, timber and palm oil industries. However, the state is also actively promoting ecotourism and renewable energy sources, such as hydroelectric power.

Sarawakians are known for their warm hospitality and welcoming nature. Visitors to the state often comment on the rich cultural heritage and the abundance of natural beauty, including the magnificent caves of Gunung Mulu, the rainforests of Borneo and the Brunei Bay National Park.

In terms of education, Sarawakians have access to a well-developed educational system, with several universities and colleges offering courses in fields such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), as well as the humanities and social sciences.
