Saransk

Saransk is the capital city of the Republic of Mordovia, Russia. It is situated on the Insar River in the Volga region, about 630 kilometers southeast of Moscow. The city has a population of around 300,000 and serves as the administrative, cultural, and economic center of Mordovia.

History: The settlement was founded in 1641 as a fortress to guard the southern approaches to Russia and developed as a regional trade center. In 1930, Saransk became the capital of the Mordovian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic and retained capital status after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

Geography and demographics: The city lies in a temperate continental climate and is home to a diverse population, including Russians and Mordvin peoples (Erzya and Moksha). Russian is the dominant language, with Mordvin languages spoken among minority groups.
