Sanonnic

Sanonnic is a fictional constructed language designed for worldbuilding and speculative fiction. It is presented here as a complete, internally coherent language system rather than an actual natural language. The project aims to illustrate how grammar, phonology, and sociolinguistic variation can interact in an imagined culture.

Phonology and orthography: Sanonnic uses five vowels and a compact consonant inventory. Syllable structure is allowed to be CV, CVV, or CVC, with occasional consonant clusters. The writing system is Latin-based, with diacritics to indicate vowel length or stress; an optional syllabary exists in in-world texts.

Morphology and syntax: The language is predominantly agglutinative, building words by concatenating affixes to roots to express tense, aspect, mood, number, and case. The default sentence order is subject–verb–object, but topical marking and sentence-initial particles allow flexible ordering. Verbs carry tense and evidential mood through suffixes; nouns take plural suffixes and postposed case clitics.

Lexicon and semantics: Core roots cover daily life, nature, technology, and social relation terms. Neologisms are formed by compounding and productive affixation; semantic shifts reflect imagined culture, such as degrees of politeness or formality embedded in pronouns and verb forms. The language features a modest inventory of honorifics.

History and usage: Sanonnic emerged from collaborative worldbuilding discussions in the 2010s and 2020s and has since been documented in in-world grammars, dictionaries, and sample texts. It is primarily used in fictional settings, role-playing games, and fan-created media as a tool for realism and consistency.
