Sandinista refers primarily to the Sandinista movement in Nicaragua, a name derived from Augusto César Sandino, a Nicaraguan revolutionary who resisted U.S. occupation in the 1920s and 1930s. The term is used for adherents of the Sandinista movement and, more specifically, for members of the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN), the political and military organization formed in the 1960s to oppose the Somoza dictatorship.
