Samsynsgrad

Samsynsgrad is a term used in vision science and ophthalmology to describe the degree of binocular fusion—the extent to which the brain combines images from both eyes into a single percept under various viewing conditions. It serves as a general descriptor of how effectively simultaneous vision is maintained during visual tasks.

Etymology and scope: The word is formed from samsyn, meaning simultaneous or binocular vision, and grad, meaning degree or scale. The term is not universally standardized, and its definition or the scale used to express it can vary between sources, clinics, or studies. In some contexts it is employed descriptively rather than as a fixed numeric metric.

Measurement and interpretation: In clinical practice, samsynsgrad is often inferred from broader measures of binocular function, such as ocular alignment, vergence ranges, and stereoacuity. Some assessments may assign a qualitative grade (for example none, partial, or full fusion) or a numeric score on a 0–100 scale.
