Samningslegar

Samningslegar is an Icelandic term used in legal and academic contexts to describe the contractual or contractually arising aspects of rights, duties, and provisions within an agreement. The word combines samningur (agreement or contract) with a suffix that marks relating to or of a certain kind, so samningslegar refers to what follows from or is contained in a contract rather than to general law outside of it. It is primarily a descriptive, not a fixed legal category, and is most often encountered in discussions of contract content and effect.

In practice, samningslegar content encompasses the obligations and rights that contracts create for the parties, as well as the conditions, covenants, and remedies those contracts establish. This includes performance duties (what each party must do), deadlines, quality terms, risk allocation, conditions for termination, and provisions on remedies or damages in case of non-performance or breach. The concept also covers interpretive questions about how contract language should be understood and applied in light of the parties’ intentions and the surrounding circumstances.

The term is typically used to distinguish contractual obligations from duties arising from non‑contractual sources, such as statutory requirements or tort law. It appears in legal writing and analysis to categorize and analyze the parts of an agreement that bind the parties and the legal consequences of meeting or failing to meet those obligations.
