Salpajärjestelmä is a Finnish term referring to a specific type of water management and purification system, particularly prevalent in rural areas or older properties. It is essentially a wastewater treatment method that utilizes natural processes to clean sewage before it is discharged. The system typically involves a series of interconnected chambers or tanks where solid waste settles and is partially decomposed. Following this initial stage, the liquid effluent is channeled through a purification field, often consisting of sand, gravel, or peat. This filter material removes remaining impurities and allows the water to slowly infiltrate into the surrounding soil, where further natural degradation occurs.
