Salmonberries

Salmonberry, scientific name Rubus spectabilis, is a species of deciduous shrub in the rose family. It is native to the Pacific Coast of North America, ranging from Alaska south to California. This plant is characterized by its large, showy pink or purple flowers, which bloom in spring, typically before the leaves fully emerge. The salmonberry is often found in moist, shaded areas, such as forests and along streambanks.

The fruit of the salmonberry, also called salmonberry, ripens in early to mid-summer. It is an aggregate fruit composed of several drupelets, similar to other raspberries and blackberries. The berries are typically orange-red to reddish-pink, though yellow varieties can occur. Their flavor is mild and somewhat tart, with a texture that can range from soft and jelly-like to firmer. While edible and sometimes consumed fresh, they are also used in jams, jellies, and pies. Native American tribes have historically utilized both the berries and the plant for food and medicinal purposes. The plant is an important food source for various wildlife, including birds and mammals.
