Salón is a Spanish term meaning a large, well-illuminated room or hall used for receiving guests, holding meetings, or for artistic gatherings. In most Spanish-speaking countries, the word also denotes a professional establishment where hair and related beauty treatments are performed, analogous to the English “hair salon.” The spelling and pronunciation vary slightly across regions, but the concept remains consistent.

Historically, the salon as a social assembly arose in 17th- and 18th-century Europe, most famously in France. Intellectuals, artists, writers, and noble patrons met in these informal yet cultured gatherings to discuss literature, politics, and the arts. These salons influenced the emergence of the Enlightenment and later Romantic movements. In the Spanish context, similar gatherings, called "salones de la cultura," were prominent in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, fostering dialogues on modern art and literature.

The term Salón also appears in architecture, where it describes the principal living room of a home or the main hall of a public building, reflecting the space’s capacity for gathering. In everyday speech, an individual might refer to a “salón besar” to mean a large living area or a “salón de belleza” for a beauty establishment.
