Saint Boniface, originally Winfrid (Wynfrith), was an English missionary and church reformer active in the Frankish Empire during the early 8th century. Born around 675 at Crediton, Devon, he studied in England and, at the urging of Pope Gregory II, travelled to the continent to evangelize among the Germanic peoples. He became a leading figure in the medieval Christianization and organization of the German lands, earning the epithet “Apostle of the Germans.” He died on 5 June 754 in Frisia.
