Safaricom

Safaricom plc is a Kenyan multinational telecommunications company headquartered in Nairobi. It is the largest mobile network operator in Kenya by subscribers and a major provider of mobile data and financial services in East Africa.

Founded in 1997 as a subsidiary of Telkom Kenya and later restructured after Vodafone’s investment, Safaricom operates a nationwide network delivering voice, data, and value-added services. Its flagship product is M-Pesa, a mobile money service launched in 2007 that has significantly expanded financial inclusion in Kenya and the region.

Safaricom is listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange and is characterized by substantial shareholding from Vodafone Group and the Government of Kenya, with public investors comprising the remainder. The company has pursued expansion in fixed broadband through fibre services and has rolled out 4G and 5G networks in selected urban areas.

Safaricom maintains corporate social responsibility initiatives through the Safaricom Foundation and participates in programs aimed at supporting digital inclusion, entrepreneurship, and health. The company operates in a competitive regulatory environment and remains a key player in Kenya’s telecommunications landscape.
