Sabinyo

Sabinyo is a stratovolcano located in the Virunga Mountains, on the border between Rwanda and Uganda. It is the oldest of the Virunga volcanoes, with its last eruption estimated to have occurred around 3,500 years ago. The mountain is named after the Kinyarwanda word "isabunyo," meaning "old man's tooth," due to its jagged, eroded peak.

The summit of Sabinyo reaches an elevation of 3,645 meters (11,959 feet) above sea level. Its most distinctive feature is its triple summit, with the central peak being the highest. The slopes of Sabinyo are covered in dense montane forest, which provides a habitat for a variety of wildlife, including the endangered mountain gorilla.

The volcano is a popular destination for hikers and tourists, particularly those interested in gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. The hike to the summit is challenging but rewarding, offering panoramic views of the surrounding Virunga chain and the distant plains. The terrain is steep and can be muddy, requiring sturdy footwear and good physical condition.

Sabinyo is considered extinct, although volcanic activity is monitored in the region. The erosion of its peaks is a testament to its age and the forces of nature. The mountain plays a significant role in the local ecosystem and is a crucial part of the cultural landscape of the communities living in its shadow.
