A SWR meter, or Standing Wave Ratio meter, is an electronic instrument used to measure the standing wave ratio in a transmission line. Standing waves are formed when radio frequency power is reflected back from a load, such as an antenna, towards the source, the transmitter. This reflection occurs when the impedance of the antenna is not perfectly matched to the impedance of the transmission line.
The SWR meter is inserted in series with the transmission line between the transmitter and the antenna.
