SVPtiedot

SVPtiedot is a metadata standard and repository framework used within the SVP project to store and exchange descriptive information about digital items, such as videos, documents, and datasets. The term SVPtiedot is Finnish for "SVP data." The design emphasizes interoperability, portability, and provenance. SVPtiedot defines core entities including Item, Person, Organization, Rights, and Relation, with a JSON-based data model and compatible RDF serialization.

Each Item includes fields for title, abstract, date, language, format, and size, along with subject terms, keywords, and genre. Provenance records the original source, modification history, and contributing agents. The schema supports multilingual descriptions and controlled vocabularies for subjects and agents to improve consistency.

Implementation and access: SVPtiedot is implemented as a modular, API-driven repository. It offers REST endpoints for creating, reading, updating, and deleting records, validation through JSON Schema, and optional RDF exports for linked data workflows. Licensing is project-defined, typically open with attribution.

Governance and use: A SVPtiedot Steering Group oversees standards, updates, and disputes. Data quality reviews, versioning, and audit trails are part of the workflow. Privacy and data protection considerations are addressed through access controls and data licensing policies. The standard is commonly used by libraries, archives, and research institutions within the SVP network to enable interoperable cataloging and data exchange with other metadata ecosystems such as Dublin Core, schema.org, and MODS.

History: The concept emerged during the late 2010s as a response to fragmented metadata practices among SVP members. Since then, several versions have been published, accompanied by implementation guides and example records.
