SSLprotokolla

SSLprotokolla, often referred to as SSL protocol, is a cryptographic protocol designed to provide secure communication over a computer network. Its primary purpose is to ensure the privacy and integrity of data exchanged between two communicating applications, typically a web browser and a web server. The protocol achieves this by using a combination of encryption, authentication, and message authentication codes.

The original SSL protocol was developed by Netscape Communications Corporation in the mid-1990s. Over time, it evolved through several versions, with SSL 2.0 and SSL 3.0 being notable iterations. However, due to identified security vulnerabilities in these older versions, SSL has largely been superseded by its successor, Transport Layer Security (TLS). While the term "SSL" is still sometimes used colloquially to refer to secure connections, modern implementations almost exclusively use TLS.

The process of establishing a secure connection using SSL/TLS is known as the handshake. During the handshake, the client and server negotiate the cryptographic algorithms to be used, exchange security certificates to authenticate each other, and generate session keys for encrypting the subsequent communication. These session keys are unique to each connection and are used to encrypt all data transmitted between the client and server for the duration of that session. This encryption prevents eavesdroppers from intercepting and reading the transmitted information. The authentication component ensures that the client is communicating with the intended server and not a malicious imposter.
