SOxemissions refer to the release of sulfur oxides (SOx) into the atmosphere, primarily composed of sulfur dioxide (SO₂) and smaller amounts of sulfur trioxide (SO₃). These pollutants are primarily generated from the combustion of fossil fuels, particularly coal and oil, which contain sulfur compounds. Industrial processes such as smelting, refining, and power generation are significant sources of SOx emissions.

Sulfur dioxide is a colorless gas with a sharp, irritating odor that is highly reactive in the atmosphere. When released, it contributes to environmental and health concerns. SOx emissions react with water vapor to form sulfuric acid, a component of acid rain, which can damage ecosystems, including forests, freshwater bodies, and soil. Additionally, SOx can exacerbate respiratory issues in humans, such as asthma and bronchitis, and contribute to the formation of fine particulate matter (PM2.5), which poses further health risks.

Regulations to control SOx emissions vary by country and region. Common strategies include the use of scrubbers in industrial smokestacks, fuel desulfurization, and the adoption of cleaner energy sources. The Clean Air Act in the United States and similar legislation in the European Union have implemented standards to reduce SOx pollution. International agreements, such as the Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution (LRTAP) Convention, also aim to mitigate cross-border SOx emissions.

Monitoring and reporting SOx emissions are essential for assessing environmental impact and compliance with regulations. Advanced technologies, including continuous emission monitoring systems (CEMS), help industries track and reduce their sulfur oxide output. Public awareness and sustainable industrial practices continue to play a crucial role in minimizing SOx-related environmental and health effects.
