LRTAP

LRTAP refers to the Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution. It is an international environmental agreement signed in 1979, with the aim of protecting the environment and human health from the adverse effects of air pollution. The convention addresses the problem of air pollutants that travel long distances across national borders.

Under the LRTAP Convention, parties work together to reduce and prevent air pollution. This is achieved through scientific research, monitoring of air pollution levels, and the development of policies and strategies to control emissions. The convention has led to several protocols that address specific air pollutants, such as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds, and heavy metals.

Key protocols include the 1985 Protocol on Sulphur, the 1988 Protocol concerning Nitrogen Oxides, and the 1999 Gothenburg Protocol to Abate Acidification, Eutrophication and Ground-level Ozone. These protocols set emission reduction targets for participating countries. The LRTAP Convention provides a framework for international cooperation and has been instrumental in improving air quality in Europe and North America. It is administered by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).
