SOAPprotokollaan, also known as Simple Object Access Protocol, is a protocol for exchanging structured information in the implementation of web services in computer networks. It relies on XML for its message format and typically uses other application layer protocols, most notably HTTP or SMTP, for message negotiation and transmission. SOAP is platform and language independent, allowing for interoperability between different systems.

The SOAP protocol defines a set of rules for structuring messages, including the format for encoding data and the rules for sending and receiving messages. It uses XML to encode the data being sent, which makes it both human-readable and machine-readable. SOAP messages are typically composed of three main parts: the envelope, which defines the message as a SOAP message; the header, which contains any optional attributes; and the body, which contains the actual information being sent.

SOAP is designed to be extensible and can be used with a variety of transport protocols. It is often used in conjunction with other web service technologies such as WSDL (Web Services Description Language) and UDDI (Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration). SOAP is widely used in enterprise environments for integrating different applications and services, as well as for enabling communication between different systems and platforms.

Despite its widespread use, SOAP has faced criticism for being overly complex and verbose, which can lead to slower performance and larger message sizes compared to other protocols like REST. However, its strong typing and support for complex operations make it a suitable choice for certain applications, particularly those requiring robust security and transaction management.
