SMTPlähetyksen, often referred to as SMTP relay, is a method of sending emails where an originating mail server does not deliver the email directly to the recipient's mail server but instead forwards it to another mail server, which then handles the final delivery. This intermediary server is known as an SMTP relay server. This process is commonly used by applications, services, or organizations that need to send emails programmatically without running their own mail infrastructure.

There are several reasons why SMTP relay is employed. One primary reason is to bypass the security and deliverability issues associated with sending emails directly from dynamic IP addresses or shared hosting environments, which are often flagged as spam. By using a dedicated SMTP relay service, emails are sent from servers with established reputations, increasing the likelihood of successful delivery. Another common use case is for bulk email sending, where services provide features for managing mailing lists, tracking delivery rates, and ensuring compliance with anti-spam regulations.

Organizations might also use SMTP relay for internal purposes, such as routing emails through a central gateway for security scanning, content filtering, or archiving before they reach external recipients. The configuration typically involves setting up the sending application or server to use the relay server's address and port, often requiring authentication credentials. This ensures that only authorized senders can utilize the relay service.
