SMSüzenetküldés, or Short Message Service messaging, is a telecommunications service used to send and receive short messages over cellular mobile networks. It was standardized in 1985 and launched commercially in 1992. The standard protocol allows for messages of up to 160 characters, though modern devices and networks can often handle longer messages by segmenting them into multiple SMS transmissions.

SMS operates on the control channel of a cellular network, meaning it can be sent and received even when voice calls are not possible, provided there is a signal. This makes it a reliable method for communication. Initially, SMS was primarily used for brief text-based communication, but its capabilities have evolved. Features like concatenation (linking multiple SMS messages to form a longer one) and the ability to send basic multimedia content (MMS) have expanded its functionality.

Despite the rise of internet-based messaging applications, SMS remains a widely used and important communication tool globally. Its ubiquity, reliance on basic cellular infrastructure, and lack of dependence on internet connectivity make it accessible to a vast number of users, including those with older devices or in areas with limited internet access. It is often used for critical alerts, two-factor authentication, and simple peer-to-peer communication.
