SMMM stands for Serbest Muhasebeci Mali Müşaviri, a professional designation in Turkey for licensed accountants and financial advisors. SMMM professionals provide accounting, bookkeeping, tax consultancy, financial reporting, budgeting, and related advisory services to individuals and businesses. They may operate as independent practitioners or within firms and are registered with the local SMMM chamber and the Union of Chambers of Turkish Certified Public Accountants and Financial Advisors (TÜRMOB).

To become an SMMM, candidates typically hold a degree in accounting or a related field, pass a national SMMM examination, complete practical training under a licensed SMMM, and obtain membership in a local chamber. Continuing professional development is required to maintain the designation.

Duties and limitations: SMMM may prepare annual financial statements, manage ledgers, handle VAT and corporate tax filings, advise on corporate structure and financing, and provide payroll and internal control services. For statutory audits or certain attestations, other licenses such as Yeminli Mali Müşaviri (YMM) or independent audit qualifications may be required; SMMM professionals may collaborate with such specialists when permitted.

Regulatory context: The profession is regulated by TÜRMOB and the 81 local chambers of SMMM; codes of ethics and professional standards apply, with mandatory continuing education and periodic re-certification as per Turkish law.
