SINEt
SINEt, or the SINet (Science Information NETwork), is a high-speed network infrastructure in Japan designed to support advanced research and development activities in science and technology. Established in 1996, SINEt is operated by the National Institute of Informatics (NII) and is funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). The network provides high-bandwidth connectivity to research institutions, universities, and other organizations across Japan, enabling the exchange of large datasets and the collaboration of researchers in various fields, including astronomy, genomics, and high-energy physics. SINEt's infrastructure includes a backbone network with a capacity of 100 Gbps and regional networks that connect to various research facilities. The network supports a wide range of applications, such as video conferencing, grid computing, and data-intensive research. SINEt also plays a crucial role in international collaborations, connecting Japanese researchers with their counterparts around the world. The network's success has led to the development of similar high-speed networks in other countries, contributing to the global advancement of scientific research.
