SBAStjenester, or "SBAS services," refers to a system of ground-based augmentation systems used to enhance the accuracy and integrity of satellite-based navigation systems, such as the Global Positioning System (GPS). The primary goal of SBAS services is to provide improved positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) capabilities for users in specific regions.

The system operates by transmitting correction signals from ground-based stations to satellites, which are then relayed to users via satellite signals. These correction signals account for various sources of error, including atmospheric delays, satellite clock errors, and ephemeris errors. By applying these corrections, SBAS services can significantly enhance the accuracy of GPS positioning from meters to within a few centimeters.

SBAS services are widely used in various applications, including aviation, maritime navigation, and land-based transportation. In aviation, for example, SBAS services are crucial for enabling precise approaches and landings, known as Required Navigation Performance (RNP) procedures. Similarly, in maritime navigation, SBAS services aid in safe and efficient vessel operations by providing accurate positioning information.

The European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) is one of the most well-known SBAS systems, providing coverage over Europe and parts of Africa and the Middle East. Other regional SBAS systems include the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) in North America and the Multi-functional Satellite Augmentation System (MSAS) in Japan. These systems work in conjunction with their respective satellite navigation constellations to deliver enhanced PNT services to users worldwide.
