SASLn

SASLn is an acronym for Secure Adaptive SensorLink Network. It designates a family of concepts and implementations intended to provide secure, scalable middleware for distributed sensor networks and edge-to-cloud analytics. The term appears in theoretical writings and experimental projects rather than as a formal, universally adopted standard.

SASLn envisions a layered architecture that separates data flow, control logic, and policy enforcement. Edge devices such as sensors or actuators connect to local gateways, which forward data to regional controllers and a cloud backend. A lightweight publish/subscribe protocol supports intermittent connectivity, with routing and basic edge processing performed within the network.

Security and reliability are central to SASLn. The design emphasizes mutual authentication, device attestation, and encryption for data in transit and at rest. It also incorporates store-and-forward buffering and multi-path routing to tolerate outages, along with policy-driven quality of service to prioritize critical events.

Applications commonly cited for SASLn include industrial Internet of Things, environmental monitoring, and smart-city deployments, where scalable data collection, robust security, and resilience to network variability are required.

Status: There is no single formal standard widely adopted as of now. The concept appears in academic literature and some experiments and has influenced discussions about modular sensor-network middleware and IoT security.
