SARtekniikkaa refers to techniques and methodologies used in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging. SAR is an active microwave remote sensing technique that uses the motion of the radar antenna to synthesize a much larger aperture than is physically present, thereby achieving high spatial resolution. This allows SAR systems to generate detailed images of the Earth's surface regardless of weather conditions or time of day, as microwaves can penetrate clouds and darkness.

The fundamental principle behind SAR is the creation of a virtual antenna array by recording the radar echoes from a target over a period of time as the platform (e.g., an aircraft or satellite) moves. By processing these recorded signals, the system can reconstruct an image with a resolution that is independent of range and dependent on the platform's velocity and the system's bandwidth. Key processes involved in SAR data processing include range compression and azimuth compression. Range compression compensates for the pulse duration, while azimuth compression utilizes the Doppler effect caused by the relative motion between the radar and the target to achieve high resolution in the along-track direction.

Various SARtekniikkaa exist, including stripmap SAR, spotlight SAR, and sliding spotlight SAR, each offering different trade-offs between coverage and resolution. Interferometric SAR (InSAR) is a sophisticated technique that uses two or more SAR images acquired from slightly different viewpoints to measure surface topography or detect subtle surface deformation. Polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) exploits the polarization characteristics of the scattered microwave signal to extract more detailed information about the target's physical properties and orientation.
