Südamekasvajad

Südamekasvajad are tumors that develop within the heart. They can be primary, originating in the heart tissue itself, or secondary, meaning they have spread to the heart from another part of the body. Primary heart tumors are rare, with secondary tumors being more common.

The most common type of primary heart tumor in adults is a myxoma, which is typically benign and originates in the left atrium. Other types of primary tumors include lipomas, rhabdomyomas (more common in children), and sarcomas. Sarcomas are malignant and can be aggressive.

Symptoms of heart tumors vary widely and depend on the tumor's size, location, and type. Some individuals may have no symptoms at all. When symptoms do occur, they can include shortness of breath, chest pain, heart palpitations, dizziness, fainting, and swelling in the legs or abdomen. Tumors can obstruct blood flow, cause arrhythmias, or lead to the release of substances that affect the body.

Diagnosis typically involves imaging techniques such as echocardiography, cardiac MRI, or CT scans. The treatment approach depends on whether the tumor is benign or malignant, its size and location, and the patient's overall health. Benign tumors like myxomas may be surgically removed. Malignant tumors often require a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Prognosis varies significantly based on the tumor type and stage.
