Sähkövastuslämmittimiä, often translated as electric resistance heaters, are devices that convert electrical energy into thermal energy through the principle of electrical resistance. This conversion is governed by Joule's law, which states that the heat produced is proportional to the electrical resistance and the square of the current flowing through the conductor. The core component of an electric resistance heater is a resistive element, typically made of materials with high resistivity like nichrome or tungsten. When an electric current passes through this element, its resistance causes it to heat up. This heat is then transferred to the surrounding environment through convection, conduction, or radiation, depending on the heater's design and application.

These heaters are widely used in various domestic, commercial, and industrial settings due to their simplicity, reliability, and relatively low initial cost. Common examples include space heaters for homes, electric kettles, toasters, hair dryers, and industrial process heating equipment. They are also found in applications requiring precise temperature control, as their heat output can be easily regulated by adjusting the voltage or current supplied. While efficient in converting electricity to heat, their overall energy efficiency is dependent on how well the generated heat is retained and utilized in the intended application, as well as the efficiency of the electricity generation source itself.
