The term derives from Rückverfolgbarkeit (traceability) and expresses the capability to reconstruct a history by following recorded data from the end product to its source.

Achieving Rückverfolgbarkeit relies on identifiers and records: lot numbers, serial numbers, production and shipment timestamps, and secure data storage. Technologies commonly employed include barcodes, RFID tags, QR codes, and digital databases. In some sectors, more advanced methods such as blockchain-based records or specialized traceability software are used to ensure data integrity and auditability.

Applications span many sectors, notably food and beverages, pharmaceuticals, and consumer electronics, where traceability supports safety recalls, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance. It also appears in manufacturing supply chains, where it helps verify provenance, prevent counterfeiting, and optimize inventory.

Regulation and standards underpinning Rückverfolgbarkeit include European and international frameworks such as GS1 system, which provides global identifiers for products and locations, and ISO 22005 for food traceability. In the EU, general food safety and supply-chain rules emphasize transparency and recall capability. Challenges include cost, data quality, interoperability between systems, and privacy concerns when tracking individual stakeholders or end consumers.
